Hi, just wanted to have a quick rant before I hurry down to make the tea. We have been in St Andrews today and I went into the local Tesco for some strawberries to my great surprise the were marked produce of USA. £1-69. I live 30 miles from one of the best berry growing areas in the UK. Last week the strawberries I had were English and very nice they were too. I did manage to get local straws in a fruit shop for a few pence more which I did not grudge but to fly berries in from the States at this time of year seems a bit O.T.T to me with the price of fuel as it is and they are always saying to buy local. I have nothing against produce being imported when we need it but this surely is carrying coals to Newcastle. End of rant. Love Joan.

I thought the same Joan, my strawberries I bought today are from Holland! They push our strawberry farmers out of the market with their low prices. Jeannette xx

Hi Joan, I agree with you completely, I think we import far too much produce as it is but your example of the strawberries is little more than ludicrous. How can they justify it? Not only is there the cost of the fuel but the carbon emissions from the plane carrying them. I thought we supposed to be doing something about global warming! We should boycott all imported produce that we really don`t need.

Joan I agree with you ~ I watched a programme on how far some of our fruit a veg travel before it reaches our shops/supermarkets ~ it was quite frightening ~ as you say talk about taking coal to Newcastle ~ when our own crops are in Season ~ Ally

Totally agree with you Joan, if enough of us stood up and insisted on local produce, it would help the economy and the cost of fresh local produce should get lower. Wouldn't mind betting they are considering importing Cornish Clotted Cream, from Saharan camels milk. Keep laughing. Take care.
