A Childhood Memory.

Good Afternoon, not a bad day here a bit cloudy but very close with an odd spot or two of rain but nothing very much.  Have just come back from the dentist not me this time but Stuart. He  had been for his check up a couple of weeks  ago and had to have a filling redone today as it was a bit slack. This got me thinking of the terror I used to have of going to the dentist when I was a child. I used to attend what was know as the school dentist these two words give me the willies even today.  I was still at primary school at this time and used to go alone on the tramcar to visit this torture chamber. The year must have been about 1951ish and I had all my fillings of which I had many done when they eventually got me in the chair without anaesthetic. I got myself in such a state that by the time it came for my turn I was in the loo with sickness and diarrhoea it was horrendous I used to miss my appointment and have to wait again it was such an ordeal I can remember it so clear. One other thing that is very clear in my mind I had to have five teeth removed under gas and I heard as clear as day The Saber Dance playing in my head it took a long time to discover what the music was but again it is so clear. After a few of these visits my parents eventually took me to a private dentist and I was a lot better but I did have a fear of the dentist for many many years but now I am glad to say I am OK with it and go every three months for my de scale and polish not bother at all.
Sorry to tell this tale but I wondered if anybody else had to go to 'The School Dentist'?.
Bye for now have a great evening. Love

Joan.

Joan I can remember having to go to the dentist when I was quite young, possibly 3 or 4.  I remember going and walking up a long flight of stairs, but nothing afterwards.  I expect I was given gas and went to sleep while he did his business!  In any case I have been terrified of dentists for years!  Odd you should post this today, as I have a dental appointment tommorrow morning!

We had to go to the school dentsit Joan yes I remember it well.I have never been afraid of the dentist though and gone all my life.Never can I say I have any bad experiances there either, so thats a good thing.I still have my own teeth like you,but getting a dentist here, where I live now, is like trying to get blood out of a stone. They are not one taking any new pacients on they are all full. So we have to go to the hospital now and that is onlyif it is an  emergeny and you are in pain..So luckily I have kept up to mine and touch wood, I don't need to go for a while yet.I am hoping anyway.I keep them well cleaned and use the listerine mouthwash three times a day and the same cleaning them.Lets hope they last a long while more..Things ar epretty bad now regarding Dentists etc around here.Take Care God Bless Kath

I can remember well the school dentist Joan...I really wonder if she ever qualified and if so as what...a butcher? I`m sure she was responsible to damaging my teeth as a child with all the fillings she gave me. The word dentist is not something I even want to think of at the moment, at least not until my jaw has settled completely. I hope Stuart doesn`t have to go back again for a while.

Love Sandra xxxx

Hi Joan yes I do remember the school dentist, not happy memories, like you was glad to go private when I was about eleven.  I would go then just to have the time off school, but I have all my teeth to-day at 64 years so they must have done something right. Take care Kathie.

I only enjoyed going to the dentist once, no twice actually. Both times were in the middle of a school day - couldn't get an appointment any other time, so had to miss a bit of the school day. One time was in the next town, another quite a long way away. That's when going to the dentist is good.
